This is FileHurl — absolutely
free sending of files without the limitation of email file
sizes.
What's up with this place?
We needed a way to transfer files to others. Email doesn't always work because of size limitations. So we created this place for our own use. And then we decided that others might find this place useful.
How does this work?
It's pretty simple (it has to be so that our "Aunt Minnie" can use it to get the picture files we send). You fill out the FileHurl form. Use the Browse button to select the file you want to send. Make sure that the email addresses are correct. Add a message if you want. Then Hurl the file.
What happens next?
The file is uploaded (sent) from your computer to our servers. And we send out an email message to the recipient.
And then what?
The recipient gets the email, and clicks on the special link in the message. That brings them to the FileHurl information page about your file. One button on that page is used to get the file. Use the "Save" button (we don't recommend the "Open" choice) to save the file on the recipient's computer. The file is transferred, and all is well in the FileHurl world.
How long will the file be available?
We figure that most people will respond quickly to the FileHurl notice. So we'll just keep the files here for 7 days. Then an automatic process will delete the file. If you try to access the special link for a file that has been deleted (expired), you'll get a polite message that the file is no longer available.
How many people can I sent the file to?
There is no real limit, you just need to enter each person's email address, separated by a comma. Each person will get their own private FileHurl notification.
What do you do with all those email addresses?
Nothing. Other than including it in the message to the recipient. We store the information from the FileHurl form in our database, but that information is deleted after the 7 day storage time. We don't sell email addresses to anyone. We only send the recipients the FileHurl information. We won't send any other email to the addresses you enter on the form. We don't like spam any more than the next guy. So your email addresses and files are safe with us.
What about the file that I send?
As long as it's not a copyrighted file, or illegal or improper content, it will stay on our servers for the 7 day limit. Then it goes away. We don't look at it (unless someone complains about it).
What if I want to complain about a file?
If someone sends you a file, and you don't think it is appropriate, just send us a message via the Problem report screen (link is at the bottom of every page here, or send it to filehurl@filehurl.com). Include the FileHurl message you received, and we'll delete the file. You can deal with the sender. We'll only send them some negative karma.
Can I send more than one file at a time?
Nope. Unless you compress (zip) them together in one file. One file, one FileHurl.
What about confidential information?
You can send it if you want. Remember, we don't look at the files, or disclose them to anyone. The only way for anyone to get a file is to use that special FileHurl link that we send to the recipient. If you are really concerned about the confidentiality of the file, encrypt it before you Hurl the file.
Is this like file sharing?
Not really. File sharing (peer-to-peer, or BitTorrent) allows anyone to get a file. You can only get a file if you know the special link for a particular file. And since the special link is a long string of random letters (a "GUID", if you care), chances are slim that anyone could guess a link to a specific file. Only the recipient gets that special link in the email we send.
Why do you call this FileHurl?
We thought it was clever. Although we aren't really that creative. The other names that we thought up were already taken. The FileHurl domain name was available. So we grabbed it.
Why is it free?
Why not? We figure that 'free' would be popular. We're hoping that you will donate something every time you use FileHurl. And we'll put some advertising links on the site if we think that will be useful. It does cost to run this place, but we figure that if most users donate a 'cup of coffee' (or other beverage) when they Hurl a file, we'll break even. Besides, we use it all the time.
So How Do I Donate?
Quite easily. Go to our Donate page, pick an amount (yeah, the amounts are strange, but unique), and the buttons will take you to a secure PayPal page to complete your payment. You can donate as much (or as little) as you want. We hope your choice will be 'much', but any donation is appreciated.
What about spammers?
They would have to be very patient; mail is only sent when you fill out the FileHurl form, or if you respond to the sender.
What are those links in the white bar at the bottom of each page?
They are links to the various social 'sharing' places. We hope that you use them to tell others about this free service. If people don't know about FileHurl ... well, it's sort of like if a tree falls in a forest ...
